THE PROJECT NOTEBOOKMeasure twice.
Make it count.
A good estimate starts with the right measurements. Here is a practical starting point for every tool.
InteriorPaint: before you measure
Measure each wall, then subtract doors and windows. Porous surfaces and strong color changes can need more paint.
Walls only; ceiling and primer are not included. Coverage varies by product and surface.
Open paint calculator →InteriorFlooring: before you measure
Split an irregular room into rectangles and calculate each section. Increase the waste allowance for diagonal layouts.
Use the coverage printed on the box. Underlay, trim, adhesive and installation are not included.
Open flooring calculator →InteriorTile: before you measure
Measure the full surface you intend to tile. Use a larger allowance for intricate patterns, cuts and future repairs.
Uses box coverage, not individual tile counts. Grout, waterproofing and adhesive are excluded.
Open tile calculator →InteriorWallpaper: before you measure
Measure the total wall run and maximum height. Match the roll dimensions to the package you buy, especially single versus double rolls.
Conservative full-height strips: openings are not subtracted. Half-drop patterns, sloped walls and complex layouts need installer verification.
Open wallpaper calculator →GardenMulch: before you measure
Measure the bed rather than the whole yard. Break curved beds into small rectangles for a practical estimate.
Depth is your chosen finished layer. Keep mulch clear of trunks and check product guidance.
Open mulch calculator →GardenSoil: before you measure
Use the inside measurements of a raised bed and the actual depth you need to fill.
Settling varies by soil blend. The allowance is adjustable; this tool does not prescribe a growing mix.
Open soil calculator →OutdoorGravel: before you measure
Measure the finished coverage area and required depth. Ask the supplier about compaction and delivery minimums.
Volume estimate only. Tons depend on the specific material density; base layers and compaction are not engineered here.
Open gravel calculator →OutdoorConcrete: before you measure
Measure the slab length, width and specified thickness. Use the yield on the exact bag you will purchase.
Quantity estimate only, not a structural design. Reinforcement, foundations, permits and load requirements need qualified advice.
